Kenwood KX-880 — Stereo Cassette Deck with direct drive, amorphous alloy head and Dolby B/C

An electronically controlled direct drive is at the heart of this silver Kenwood stereo cassette deck: the capstan sits directly on the motor shaft, entirely without an intermediate drive belt. Together with the amorphous head and automatic tape-type detection, the KX-880 aims for a quiet, even tape run and clean recordings. The transport control — including music search and track functions — is fully electronic and conveniently operated from the keypad.

Highlights & Features:

Computer Controlled Direct Drive: the capstan is driven by a directly coupled, electronically regulated motor. With no drive belt between motor and capstan, the tape runs evenly and with low wow and flutter.
Amorphous alloy head: the wear-resistant combined record/playback head resolves even fine highs cleanly.
Dolby B and Dolby C markedly reduce tape hiss (Dolby C more than Dolby B) without colouring the sound.
Auto Tape Selector: the deck detects normal, CrO2 and metal tape automatically and sets equalisation and bias to suit.
DPSS music search: via REW DPSS and FF DPSS the transport cues directly to the start of the desired track.
Index Scan and Blank Search: brief sampling of each track start for quick location, plus automatic cueing to the next unrecorded section of tape.
Repeat function for repeated playback.
Fluorescent peak hold meter with peak retention for left and right channel; switchable DPSS / linear tape counter.
Adjustable recording level (Rec Level) and recording balance (Rec Balance); MPX filter for clean Dolby recordings from FM radio.
