Denon PMA-425R – Stereo Integrated Amplifier in Black with Phono MM, Speakers A/B and Tape Copy

Two pairs of speakers, a turntable and two recorders: this is the kind of system the Denon PMA-425R was designed for. The black stereo integrated amplifier delivers 2 × 45 W into 8 ohms across the full 20 Hz to 20 kHz range and 2 × 70 W into 4 ohms (DIN); Denon quotes total harmonic distortion at 0.02 %. The full-width hi-fi chassis stands on two wide round feet, and despite its features the front stays tidy: power switch and speaker selection on the left, the large volume knob in the centre, the source buttons above four rotary controls on the right.

The PMA-425R fits a living-room rack just as well as a desk. Records, CD and radio each get their own input, a cassette deck or DAT recorder connects to one of two separate tape loops, and a second pair of speakers can be run in another room, for example.

Highlights & Features

Source direct switch: balance, tone and loudness controls are bypassed and the signal goes straight to the volume control, giving a signal-to-noise ratio of 105 dB on the line inputs.
Phono input for turntables with an MM cartridge (2.5 mV / 47 kohms) plus GND ground terminal on the rear.
Speaker switching A/B: run two pairs of speakers individually or together; 4–16 ohms for A or B, 8–16 ohms for A + B.
Two tape loops DAT/TAPE-1 and DAT/TAPE-2 with their own button and indicator; COPY dubs from tape 1 to tape 2, and with a 3-head deck the recording can be monitored off tape.
Six sources selected by buttons with indicator: phono, CD, tuner, aux, DAT/tape 1 and DAT/tape 2.
Tone controls for bass and treble (±8 dB at 100 Hz and 10 kHz) and balance.
Variable loudness on its own knob: continuously adjustable from FLAT to full boost (+10 dB at 50 Hz, +5 dB at 10 kHz) for low-level listening.
Infrared receiver (REMOTE SENSOR) with MUTE/STANDBY indicator for remote operation, headphone jack on the front.
