Panasonic DMR-ES35V – VHS DVD recorder with one-touch copying and DV input

Saving old video cassettes to DVD without having to cable two machines together – that is the job Panasonic built the DMR-ES35V for, combining a VHS deck and a DIGA DVD recorder in a single cabinet. Both drives share controls, on-screen menu and outputs; the DRIVE SELECT button decides which one is active. Dubbing is handled internally, and the quality of the copy is set by the chosen recording mode.

Today the combo is mainly in demand for digitising family archives: cassettes, footage from MiniDV camcorders or material from external sources ends up on DVD-RAM or on a finalised DVD that also plays on other players. At the same time it remains a fully fledged player for commercial DVDs and VHS tapes. The built-in analogue tuner no longer receives any channels in Germany; recording is done via the SCART, RCA and DV inputs.

Highlights & Features

COPYING button: dub VHS cassettes to DVD at the touch of a button and, in the other direction, non-copy-protected DVD titles to VHS; additionally copying via copy lists and timer-controlled copying.
DV input (IEEE 1394, 4-pin) behind a front flap: connect MiniDV camcorders digitally and record straight to DVD with DV Auto Rec; a chapter is created automatically at every picture break.
Multi-format recording on DVD-RAM, DVD-R, DVD-R DL, DVD-RW, DVD+R, DVD+R DL and DVD+RW; recording modes XP, SP, LP and EP (up to 8 hours on a 4.7 GB disc) plus Flexible Rec (FR), which adapts picture quality to the free space on the disc.
DVD-RAM convenience: recording starts about one second after switching on (quick start), time-shifted playback of a recording in progress, simultaneous recording and playback, TIME SLIP and Quick View (playback at 1.3x speed with intelligible sound).
Editing on the machine: divide, delete and name titles and chapters, create playlists, build a top menu and finalise discs – clearly laid out in the DIRECT NAVIGATOR.
Playback of DVD-Video, DVD-Audio (two-channel), audio CD, Video CD and SVCD as well as DivX, MP3 and JPEG/TIFF files from CD-R/RW and DVD-R.
Picture output via component video with progressive scan, RGB via the AV1 SCART socket for DVD playback, and S-Video; optical digital output for PCM, Dolby Digital and DTS to an AV receiver.
VHS deck with 6-head system and hi-fi stereo sound, S-VHS Quasi Playback (SQPB) for playing S-VHS cassettes, NTSC playback as PAL60, LP/EP long play, VISS index search, slow motion, still frame and JET REW.
Front AV3 input with S-Video, video and audio L/R (RCA) for camcorders or other sources.
