Pioneer A-656 Mark II — stereo integrated amplifier with non-switching output stage and MM/MC phono

„Reference Stereo Amplifier“ reads the gold script on the front panel — Pioneer’s own positioning for the A-656 Mark II, an analogue stereo integrated amplifier from around 1990. The concept rests on the Type II non-switching output stage, which avoids crossover distortion by design, and on Pioneer’s clean-ground technology, which keeps interference away from the signal ground path. Honeycomb structures in the chassis and heat sink stiffen the case and calm the mechanics; at 13.5 kilograms the unit sits reassuringly solid in the rack.

The amplifier is laid out as the control centre of a fully grown analogue system: it manages a turntable and several tape machines, keeps recording and listening paths cleanly separated and drives demanding low-impedance speakers with stability. Anyone running a classic stereo chain today gets an amplifier that reproduces music in a calm, controlled manner.
