Pioneer CT-S740S — 3-head cassette deck with 3 motors, dual capstan, Dolby S, HX Pro and Super Auto BLE XD

Recording with off-tape monitoring instead of recording blind: the Pioneer CT-S740S is a stereo cassette deck with Reference Master Mechanism in which a DC servo motor drives the dual-capstan transport, a separate DC reel motor moves the hubs and a third DC motor serves as assist motor. With wow and flutter of 0.023 % (WRMS) according to the owner's manual and a hard permalloy combination head whose separate record and playback gaps allow listening straight from the tape, it is built for home recordings that should also sound right on other decks.

On the shelf between CD player and amplifier the black deck plays two roles. It records CD, vinyl or FM broadcasts after calibrating itself to the loaded cassette by microprocessor, and it plays an existing collection with Dolby B, C or S recordings decoded correctly, refreshing dull-sounding tapes during playback with the FLEX system.

Highlights & Features

3-head transport: hard permalloy record/playback combination head with separate record and playback gaps (marked REC/PB) plus a ferrite erase head; off-tape monitoring via the MONITOR button (tape/source), the deck switches to the tape signal automatically when recording or playback starts.
Three motors according to the manual: DC servo motor for the capstan drive, DC reel motor and DC assist motor; dual capstan with two capstan shafts and two pinch rollers on both sides of the head block; ATLC (Automatic Tape Loose Canceller) takes up tape slack when the motorised cassette door closes.
Super Auto BLE XD: a microprocessor sets bias, recording level and equalisation (H-EQ/M-EQ) for the loaded cassette in about 15 to 25 seconds; the XD stage checks the tape's high-frequency recording capability with high-level test signals and controls the bias during recording (HX Pro is inactive while XD is on; XD can be switched off).
Dolby B, C and S noise reduction selectable; according to the manual Dolby S also reduces tape hiss in the bass range and within recorded passages. Dolby HX Pro is not noise reduction but controls the bias current according to the high-frequency content of the music signal; MPX filter for Dolby recordings from FM stereo broadcasts.
FLEX system (Frequency Level Expander): during playback of tapes with dull treble it raises the level above 1 kHz according to the 1/f curve, by up to 12 dB around 10 kHz; the compensation is re-determined for each selection in about 3 seconds and shown by the FLEX indicator.
Music search across up to 15 selections forwards or backwards, tape return with automatic playback start (RETURN), repeat playback of the cassette side (up to 16 passes) and recording mute for inserting blank spaces.
CD synchro recording with a Pioneer CD player via the CD-DECK SYNCHRO jack (the deck starts recording and the CD player starts playback at the same time); timer switch REC / OFF / PLAY-REPEAT for timed recording or playback via an external audio timer; integration into Pioneer SR system remote control via CONTROL IN/OUT.
FL level meter with 12+1 segments and peak hold, switchable range (METER RANGE); 4-digit counter with tape, time and remaining-time modes (tape length C-46/C-60/C-80/C-90 selectable); automatic tape selector with TYPE I/II/IV indicator; display off function; last memory.
Recording level (REC LEVEL) and recording balance (REC BALANCE) adjustable separately, headphone output with its own level control on the front, power switch with STANDBY indicator.
