Sony TC-K711S — 3-head cassette deck with closed loop dual capstan, 3 motors, Dolby S and HX Pro

Anyone who wants to judge a recording straight off the tape while it is still being made gets a Sony stereo cassette deck with separate record, playback and erase heads in the TC-K711S. The transport guides the tape between two capstan shafts in a closed loop, and three DC motors share the capstan drive, the reels and the mechanism. According to the owner's manual, wow and flutter is 0.05 % (WRMS) and the frequency response extends to 20,000 Hz with metal tape.

In daily use the black deck is a tool for careful dubbing from CD, vinyl or radio: before recording, the loaded cassette is calibrated for bias and level with a test tone, then the choice falls to Dolby B, C or S. In playback it reproduces an existing collection with matching decoding, finds selections with the music sensor and returns to a marked spot via the counter memory.

Highlights & Features

3-head system: separate record head and playback head (SD heads each) plus a sendust-and-ferrite (S&F) erase head; off-tape monitoring via the MONITOR button (SOURCE/TAPE) — the deck selects SOURCE automatically when recording, one press switches to the tape signal.
Closed loop dual capstan transport: two capstan shafts, each with its own pinch roller, on both sides of the head block; three motors according to the manual (DC servo capstan motor, DC reel motor, DC assist motor for the mechanism); ceramic cassette holder for stable tape running; motorised door (OPEN/CLOSE), playback or recording starts directly even with the door open.
Dolby B, C and S selectable; according to the manual Dolby S provides the strongest reduction of tape hiss in both low and high frequencies (about 10 dB at 100 Hz, 24 dB at 1 kHz). Dolby HX Pro is not noise reduction but controls the bias during recording according to the high-frequency content of the signal; MPX filter for Dolby recordings from FM stereo broadcasts.
Bias and recording level calibration: the CALIBRATION button records test tones of 8 kHz and 400 Hz and the level meter shows both playback readings; the BIAS control (about ±20 %) and the REC LEVEL calibration control (about ±3 dB) match the deck to the loaded cassette. Automatic tape selection (ATS) via the cassette detector slots with TYPE indicator.
Multi-AMS music sensor skips up to 30 selections forwards or backwards; Memory Play/Memory Stop returns to a memorised position via the digital linear counter (minutes/seconds); Auto Play starts playback automatically after rewinding.
Record muting (REC MUTE) inserts blanks of four seconds or any length so the music sensor separates selections cleanly; switching from playback to recording without stopping the tape (hold play and press REC).
Peak level meter with recommended marks per tape type, separate controls for recording level (large knob) and recording balance; TIMER switch REC/OFF/PLAY for timer-activated recording or playback via an external audio timer.
Headphone output (6.3 mm jack) with its own level control on the front; infrared sensor for Sony remote commanders with cassette deck control capability.
