Onkyo K-185II — compact full auto reverse cassette deck with Dolby B/C, HX Pro and CD dubbing

Considerably narrower than a classic 43 cm component, the K-185II is one of Onkyo's compact system building blocks and takes up little shelf width. Its front is pared down to the essentials — a large cassette door bearing the words FULL AUTO REVERSE, a slim column of buttons and, below, the transport keys with separate play buttons for both tape directions. Onkyo does without a display, counter, level control and headphone socket; the deck is meant for listeners who load a cassette and let both sides run through in one go.

Alongside an Onkyo amplifier or receiver with an RI connection, the black housing slots into a compact system; via its cinch (RCA) sockets it also works with any other amplifier that has a free tape connection. Recordings from a tuner or CD player come out with little hiss thanks to Dolby noise reduction, and HX Pro keeps the treble clean on tape even at high recording levels.

Full auto reverse: playback in both tape directions without turning the cassette; separate play buttons for forward and reverse, each with a direction LED, plus the REVERSE MODE button with indicator for the behaviour at the end of the tape.
Dolby B and Dolby C noise reduction, selected with the DOLBY NR button; the active type is shown by the B and C LEDs.
Dolby HX Pro is not noise reduction but dynamically adjusts the bias during recording — for more treble headroom on any tape type.
CD dubbing with the ALBUM and FADE modes (front-panel lettering) for copying CDs to cassette; a dedicated LED indicates active dubbing.
Auto Space inserts blanks between tracks during recording, REC PAUSE with indicator LED puts the deck into record standby.
RI Remote Control (Remote Interactive): two sockets on the rear integrate the deck into an Onkyo system; POWER button with STAND-BY indicator.
Compact format: the housing is considerably narrower than the 43 cm standard width of full-size hi-fi components, so it suits Onkyo's compact systems or a tight shelf.
Unswitched AC outlet on the rear for connecting a further component; fixed mains cable.
