Sony EV-S650PS — Video8 recorder with Digital Multi Audio System

Six digital stereo tracks on a single 8mm cassette – this concept sets the EV-S650PS apart from ordinary home video recorders. Sony designed the deck as a Digital Multi Audio System: besides picture and sound, the full width of the tape can be used purely for PCM audio recordings, with levels set by slider controls and a peak programme meter just like on a tape deck. The result is a recorder that plays back Video8 archives reliably and at the same time works as a digital stereo audio recorder with long running times.

In everyday use the recorder suits any setup where 8mm recordings are to be reviewed, assembled or digitised via SCART. The flying erase head delivers clean transitions when editing, and the index system locates individual recordings on the tape by itself. Anyone wishing to preserve radio programmes, records or old reel tapes digitally gets a straightforward solution with the PCM tracks, each of which uses the full running time of the tape.

Highlights & Features

Video8 recording and playback in SP and LP (P5-90: 1 h 30 min or 3 h); the playback speed is detected automatically.
PCM digital audio (2 channels) as a stereo track in addition to the FM mono standard track; audio dub adds new sound to any recorded tape via line in or microphone on the PCM track, and the AUDIO MONITOR selector plays the PCM track, the standard track or a mix of both.
Audio capability: in Digital Multi Audio mode up to 6 pure PCM stereo audio tracks are available across the full tape width, selected directly with buttons 1 to 6. Levels are set manually with the L/R REC LEVEL sliders and the peak programme meter; for the PCM sound Sony quotes 20 Hz to 15 kHz, more than 90 dB dynamic range and less than 0.005 % wow and flutter (RMS). With an audio tuner that has a timer, up to 6 radio programmes can be recorded on schedule – in parallel on 6 tracks or in series on one track.
Flying erase head for glitch-free transitions when assembling scenes; EDIT button reduces signal loss when copying tape to tape; frame-by-frame recording (approx. 8 frames per step) from record pause; assemble editing via the Control S jack with a second Sony recorder, connection of the RM-E100V editing controller provided for.
Index system: set and erase index marks, index scan plays the first 10 seconds or so of each recording, index search jumps up to 99 marks ahead or back – on the digital audio tracks as well.
Still picture with STILL ADJ adjustment, picture search forward/reverse, double-speed playback (x2), PFS (Picture Fine Select) for tapes from other machines and a SHARPNESS control; GO TO ZERO returns to the counter zero point, remaining-time display in the window.
Timer for 6 recordings up to three weeks in advance, sleep timer up to 5 hours; microphone input, REC LEVEL controls and operating controls behind the front flap, adjustable headphone output on the front.
