Technics SJ-MD100 — MiniDisc deck with 24-bit DSP signal processing

24 bits where the maths happens: sound processing in this MiniDisc deck is handled by a digital signal processor working at 24-bit word length — finer resolution than the 16 bits of the disc format itself. The intermediate stages of ATRAC coding therefore run with computational headroom before the signal is written to the MiniDisc. Technics built the SJ-MD100 in full 43 cm width; a fold-down front flap keeps the secondary controls covered in everyday use.

The deck is made for people who do not just play music but compile it themselves: recordings from CD, radio or vinyl end up on MiniDisc and can be titled, divided or erased afterwards without another real-time pass. Within a stereo system the recorder takes over the role the cassette deck held for so long — with direct track access instead of winding.

Two optical digital inputs (OPT 1/OPT 2) with built-in sampling rate converter — sources running at 32 or 48 kHz are recorded digitally as well.
Analogue recording via the RCA input; the front REC LEVEL dial sets the recording level continuously.
Synchro Rec starts recording automatically with the source; the timer switch (REC/PLAY) allows timer-controlled recording and playback via an external timer.
Mono mode doubles the recording time of a MiniDisc (REC MODE switchable between stereo and mono).
Track marks set automatically or manually; naming, dividing and combining tracks is done conveniently via the jog/push-set dial and the edit keys.
Programme and random play directly on the unit (PLAY MODE); headphone output with its own level control.
Motorised disc loading: the MiniDisc is drawn in automatically after being pushed in part way.
