Denon ADV-M71 – compact DVD surround receiver in silver with Dolby Digital, DTS and RDS tuner (receiver without speakers)

Just 21 centimetres wide, the Denon ADV-M71 fits a DVD drive, surround decoder, two power amplifiers and an FM/AM tuner into a midi-size chassis. The brushed aluminium front with its large volume knob and half-mirrored display looks tidy, and the key functions can be operated directly on the unit. The sound is geared towards film soundtracks without neglecting music: a signal processor handles multichannel audio and recreates a surround image even where only two speakers are in place.

That makes the unit a good fit for bedrooms, kitchens, offices or holiday flats – anywhere a TV with a SCART input and two bookshelf speakers should deliver films, radio and CDs without a full home cinema taking up space. Anyone who wants more channels later can expand the system step by step via the pre-amp outputs. Only the receiver is sold; speakers are not included.

Highlights & Features

Receiver without speakers: only the unit is supplied. Two front speakers rated 6 to 16 ohms connect to the screw terminals.
Dolby Digital and DTS decoders plus Dolby Pro Logic II for stereo and Dolby Surround sources; the Dolby Virtual Speaker mode creates a virtual 5.1 surround image over just two speakers.
3.1 pre-amp outputs (centre, surround left and right, subwoofer) for expansion to a 5.1 system with an external power amplifier and active subwoofer; in this configuration the 5CH Stereo, Mono Movie and Matrix modes are added.
DVD drive for DVD-Video, finalised DVD-R/RW in video mode, Video CD and audio CD as well as CD-R/RW with MP3, WMA and JPEG files; Kodak Picture CDs play as a slide show. Multiple audio languages (up to 8), subtitles (up to 32), camera angles and parental lock.
Picture output via the AV1 SCART socket as composite, S-Video or RGB, switchable between PAL and NTSC – suited to TVs and projectors with a SCART input.
Bass and treble controls (±10 dB each in 2 dB steps), Super Dynamic Bass (SDB), tone defeat and Direct mode; DSP sound fields Rock Arena, Jazz Club and Video Game, plus Dolby Headphone for spatial film sound via the 6.3 mm headphone jack.
FM/AM tuner with 40 presets, custom station names (up to 8 characters) and RDS with station name, programme type search (PTY), traffic programme search (TP) and Radio Text.
Optical digital input (D.AUX) and optical digital output (Dolby Digital/DTS bitstream or PCM), two analogue line inputs/outputs for recording and adding further sources; wake-up timer (daily or once) and sleep timer up to 120 minutes.
