JVC TD-R431 — auto-reverse cassette deck with Dolby B/C, HX Pro, bias control and D·D·R·P

“Quick Reverse” is printed on the cassette door of this black JVC stereo cassette deck, and it sums up how the machine is used: when one side ends, the transport reverses direction and carries on playing, so nobody has to get up and turn the cassette over. According to the front panel lettering, the mechanism is run by computer-controlled full-logic electronics, and the transport buttons respond to a light touch. For your own recordings the deck is well equipped, with its own bias control and JVC’s D·D·R·P system alongside Dolby HX Pro.

That makes the TD-R431 a fit for two jobs: long listening sessions with an existing collection of audio plays, mixtapes and radio recordings, and transfers from vinyl or CD that can be fine-tuned by hand to the tape in use. It connects to any amplifier via RCA jacks, and a DIN socket is available for older systems.

Highlights & Features

Auto reverse (“Quick Reverse” lettering): at the end of the tape the transport changes direction automatically. Three REVERSE MODE buttons select one side, both sides or continuous play, the DIRECTION button reverses the direction at any time; REV and FWD indicators in the display show the current direction.
Computer Controlled Full Logic Tape Transport: logic-controlled transport with soft-touch buttons for stop, rewind, play, fast forward, REC/REC MUTE, pause and direction change; RUN, REC and PAUSE status indicators in the display.
Dolby B and C noise reduction, switchable via DOLBY NR ON/OFF and the B/C selector. Dolby HX Pro (“Dolby HX Pro System” lettering) is not a noise reduction system; it adjusts the bias during recording according to the treble content of the music signal.
BIAS control (−/+) on the front for fine-tuning the bias to the cassette in use; recording level set with the large INPUT LEVEL knob, plus a BALANCE control for the ratio between left and right channel.
D·D·R·P (Dynamics Detection Recording Processor) with its own ON/OFF button and its own display indicator, as an aid for setting the recording level.
Two-channel peak level indicator (PEAK LEVEL INDICATOR) with NORM/CrO2 and METAL markings; tape counter with COUNTER RESET.
REC/REC MUTE for recording and record muting, to insert blanks between tracks.
PHONES headphone jack on the front, power switch with standby position (ON/STANDBY); COMPU LINK-1 / SYNCHRO on the rear for system control in a JVC setup.
