Sony TC-K770ES — 3-head cassette deck with closed-loop dual capstan, quartz-locked direct drive, 3 motors and HX Pro

Quartz-locked direct drive, a closed tape path between two capstan shafts and three separate heads: Sony designed the TC-K770ES from its ES line squarely for precise home recordings. According to the service manual, wow and flutter stays at 0.025 % (WRMS), and because the record and playback heads work separately, the freshly recorded tape can be heard while recording is still in progress and compared with the source.

In everyday use the deck suits anyone who wants to treat every cassette individually instead of relying on factory settings. Bias and recording level are matched to the loaded tape by hand using built-in test tones, and the CD player gets its own direct input. It works just as well as a playback machine for an established collection of Dolby B and Dolby C recordings.

Highlights & Features

3-head transport: separate record and playback heads (permalloy according to the service manual) plus a sendust-ferrite erase head; off-tape monitoring via the MONITOR button (SOURCE/TAPE) to compare the recording with the source signal while the tape is running.
Closed-loop dual capstan with quartz-locked direct drive (printed on the cassette door): according to the service manual the capstan is driven directly by a linear-torque BSL motor, joined by a DC reel motor and another DC motor – three motors in total. A cassette stabilizer in the door holds the cassette steady.
Manual tape calibration: the CALIBRATION button switches on test tones of 400 Hz and 8 kHz; BIAS (±20 %) and REC LEVEL (±3 dB) set bias and recording sensitivity so that both level meters read the same.
REC EQ CAL (LOW / NORMAL / HIGH) additionally changes the recording characteristic to lift or soften the treble to suit the music or unusual tape types; the basic setting for normal, chrome and metal tape is handled by Automatic Tape Selection (ATS).
Dolby B and Dolby C selectable; Dolby HX Pro is not noise reduction but adjusts the bias during recording according to the high-frequency content of the signal, improving headroom in the upper frequency range; MPX filter for Dolby recordings of FM stereo broadcasts.
Fluorescent display with peak program meter for both channels, linear counter showing elapsed playing or recording time, and indicators for tape type, Dolby, MPX filter, HX Pro and monitor position; switchable via DISPLAY MODE.
AMS music search forwards and backwards, memory play via the counter MEMORY button, REC MUTE for inserting blank spaces and a REC / OFF / PLAY timer switch for timed recording or playback with an external audio timer.
CD DIRECT / LINE input selector on the front, large REC LEVEL control with separate BALANCE control, headphone output with its own PHONE LEVEL control; infrared receiver in the display for remote operation.
