Marantz M-CR502 CD receiver – CD player, FM tuner with RDS and amplifier with four digital power stages

Four digital power amplifiers instead of the usual two: that is what sets this compact Marantz receiver apart. They allow bi-wiring speakers to be driven separately for bass and mid/treble, or two pairs of speakers to be run in different places. The housing with its glossy top and rounded side cheeks combines a CD drive, radio section and amplifier. The front is reduced to two ring-shaped control panels to the left and right of the display; the connection panel sits recessed beneath the overhanging top and cannot be seen from above.

The unit is meant for a living-room shelf, study or bedroom, wherever a complete system is wanted but not a stack of separate components. A TV with analogue audio output, a streaming player or a turntable with phono preamp can be connected to the AUX inputs, and an active subwoofer to its own pre-out.

Highlights

CD player, FM tuner and stereo amplifier in a 28 cm wide housing, rated output 2 x 40 W into 8 ohms (maximum 2 x 50 W)
Four digital amplifier channels with bi-amp mode: bi-wiring capable speakers are driven separately for bass and mid/treble (then up to 25 W per channel)
Two speaker outputs A and B, usable individually or simultaneously – for example for a second pair of speakers in another room
Separate voicing for each speaker pair (FLAT or RESPONSE 1–4) with bass roll-off from 60 or 100 Hz and optional lift around 400 Hz – useful for speakers placed near a wall or on furniture
Plays audio CDs as well as MP3 and WMA files on CD-R and CD-RW (including multisession), with random play, repeat functions including A-B and programming of up to 40 tracks
Front USB port for memory sticks with MP3 and WMA files, display of ID3 tags, folder and file names
FM reception with RDS (station name, PTY search, Radio Text, clock time) and 30 presets
Three analogue AUX inputs, one of them a 3.5 mm jack on the front for portable players, plus AUX output and subwoofer pre-out
Tone controls for bass and treble (±10 dB each) and balance, wake-up and sleep timer, three-step display dimmer and ECO mode for low standby consumption
