Panasonic NV-F70 — 6-head VHS video recorder with jog/shuttle and editing functions

Finding a frame precisely, inserting scenes, laying new sound over existing footage: the NV-F70 HQ belongs to the large VHS decks that Panasonic designed as a control centre for camcorder material and editing in front of the home TV. It is operated mainly via the jog/shuttle knob on the right of the front panel, which moves the tape smoothly in both directions without reaching for the remote control.

Behind the fold-down control panel sit the adjustments that matter for archive work: recording level, picture sharpness and headphone volume. This makes the recorder well suited to playing back and digitising old family recordings as well as to dubbing between two video machines. Anyone who also uses cassettes as an audio medium gets a hi-fi stereo track with a wide dynamic range, for example for recordings from vinyl or reel-to-reel tape.

Highlights & Features

6-head transport with hi-fi stereo sound; playback via the hi-fi track, the normal track or both mixed (Hi-Fi/Normal mix switch).
Jog/shuttle control on the front: the shuttle ring sets forward and reverse search in several steps, the jog dial advances field by field; plus still frame, forward and reverse slow motion and double-speed playback.
Editing functions: insert editing (new picture with hi-fi sound into an existing recording), audio dub for re-recording the normal track, edit switch and synchro edit socket for controlled dubbing from a compatible camcorder or a second NV-F70.
Manual audio level control: separate Audio Rec Level controls for left and right with level meter in the display, MPX filter for FM recordings, microphone input on the front.
Picture optimisation during playback: digital tracking with automatic tracking and manual correction, picture sharpness control (soft/sharp) and switchable noise filter for tapes with poor picture quality.
Convenient tape navigation: VHS index search, intro scan, time search, real-time counter and remaining tape time display.
Video input and output as BNC sockets on the rear, plus audio L/R on RCA and a SCART socket.
Headphone output with its own volume control for monitoring during recording and playback.
