Toshiba RD-XV48 – VHS, DVD and hard disk recorder with 160 GB hard drive and DV input

Three drives under one lid: the Toshiba RD-XV48 brings together a VHS deck with hi-fi stereo sound, a DVD recorder and a 160 GB hard drive, and copies between all three media in both directions. Old family tapes can first go to the hard drive, be trimmed and divided into chapters there and then end up on DVD – or go straight from tape to disc at the press of a button.

The unit comes into its own when digitising video collections and when backing up DV camcorder tapes, which are fed in through the DV input on the front. Hard drive and DVD content is sent to a flat-screen TV via HDMI, upscaled up to 1080p, while the VHS picture is available on the SCART sockets. The built-in tuner no longer receives any channels in Germany; recordings are made via SCART, the front AV jacks or DV.

Highlights & Features

Three media in one unit: VHS video recorder, DVD recorder and internal 160 GB hard drive with up to 267 hours of recording time (SLP mode); copying in both directions between hard drive, DVD and VHS.
One-touch dubbing on the front panel: dedicated buttons for VHS → DVD and hard drive → DVD; high-speed copying from hard drive to DVD at up to 32 times normal copy speed (SLP titles to DVD-R/+R).
DVD recording to DVD-R, DVD-RW (Video and VR mode), DVD+R and DVD+RW in five recording modes from XP to SLP (60 to 480 minutes per 12 cm disc); automatic finalising with an automatically created title menu.
VHS deck with 6-head technology and hi-fi stereo sound, recording and playback in SP and LP; playback detects PAL, SECAM and MESECAM automatically; index and time search to find individual recordings quickly.
DV input (IEEE 1394, 4-pin) on the front: copy footage from a DV camcorder straight to hard drive, DVD or VHS; alongside it a front AV input with video and audio L/R for analogue camcorders and source devices.
Simultaneous recording and playback on the hard drive: watch the already recorded part of a recording in progress or play another title at the same time.
Extensive editing on hard drive and DVD-RW: playlists, add, delete and hide chapter marks, divide and combine titles, delete individual scenes, name titles and protect titles against deletion.
Playback of DVD-Video (region code 2), Video CD, audio CD and CD-R/RW with MP3, JPEG and DivX files (official DivX Certified, DivX also from DVD±R/RW); HDMI output selectable in 576p, 720p, 1080i or 1080p, progressive scan via component; Dolby Digital and DTS as bitstream via HDMI and the coaxial digital output.
