Panasonic NV-FS100 — S-VHS video recorder with Amorphous Pro Head and jog/shuttle

Frame-accurate work on tape was this recorder's speciality: with the large shuttle ring and the jog dial nested inside it, any scene can be scanned forwards and backwards until exactly the right single frame is on screen. Panasonic designed the NV-FS100 for ambitious video work — from dubbing camcorder footage to reworking finished tapes — and fitted it with video heads made of amorphous material, marked Amorphous Pro Head on the housing.

Today the machine is particularly well suited to playing back and digitising VHS and S-VHS archives: via the separate S-Video connection the picture signal reaches a capture card or television without the composite detour, and the HiFi audio tracks preserve the sound at a quality well above the linear track. For your own recordings the level can be set manually if desired.

Jog/shuttle unit: shuttle ring for picture search up to 9x speed, slow motion, still frame and double-speed playback — forwards and backwards; the jog dial advances frame by frame.

Use as an audio recorder is explicitly covered in the manual (“hi-fi audio recorder”): a turntable or tuner connects to the line/audio input, the level is set by hand on the audio level meters, and the MPX filter is intended for recordings from an FM tuner. In LP mode an E-240 cassette runs up to 480 minutes without a tape change — enough for a full concert evening.
Digital tracking adjusts the tracking automatically; manual adjustment also possible.
Two-channel audio playback (stereo/bilingual) with display indication; Hi-Fi/normal mix switch for dubbed tapes.
Adjustable headphone output, picture control (soft/sharp) and switchable noise filter for weaker recordings.

Servicing of this unit:

The YC pack, the HQ pack, the servo pack and the power supply of this recorder have been overhauled, with all capacitors replaced. The YC pack and HQ pack form the signal processing behind the S-VHS picture quality: separate handling of the luminance and chrominance signals plus the HQ picture circuitry. The servo pack controls the head drum and tape transport and thus determines tracking and running stability. Ageing electrolytic capacitors in the power supply are a known weak point on units of this era, since every supplied assembly depends on them.

The tape transport mechanism has been fully serviced and the pinch roller replaced.
