Sony EV-T1 — twin deck for Video Hi8 and VHS with editing functions

Hi8 cassettes from the camcorder often sit unwatched in a cupboard — the EV-T1 brings them back to the television and, if you wish, straight onto VHS. Sony fitted two complete transports into one chassis: a Video Hi8 and Video8 deck on the left, a VHS deck on the right. Both work independently, and copying runs in either direction.

That turns the unit into an editing hub for private archives: camcorder footage can be reviewed, marked in the desired order and transferred to a VHS tape in a single pass. If the tapes are to be processed further instead, S-video connectors sit next to the RCA sockets and carry brightness and colour separately — with Hi8 this visibly preserves picture sharpness.

Highlights & Features

Two separate transports in one chassis: Video Hi8 / Video8 on the left, VHS on the right — each deck operates on its own and has its own area in the display.
Copying in both directions (Video8 → VHS and VHS → Video8); the selected direction is shown on the front panel.
Programmed assemble editing: in and out points are located and marked on the source tape, after which the machine copies the scenes in the programmed order.
Advanced Synchro Edit: playback and recording decks start together so the copy begins without a run-in. Step-by-step manual editing is available as an alternative.
VHS transport with 7-head technology and a flying erase head — it erases the previous recording directly on the head drum, so edit transitions start without picture disturbance.
Digital Auto Tracking: the VHS deck adjusts tracking by itself; manual fine adjustment is available for normal, slow-motion and still playback.
Hi-Fi stereo sound on both transports; the VHS deck switches between the hi-fi and the normal audio track, and bilingual broadcasts are recorded on separate channels.
Suitable for long audio recordings: via the AUDIO LINE IN 2 sockets the 8mm deck records stereo or bilingual sound, while the VHS deck puts the audio on its hi-fi track. In LP mode an E-180 cassette holds six hours and an E5-120 in the 8mm transport four hours — an evening of radio or a complete concert broadcast fits without a tape change.
Dual Mode Shuttle ring on the front panel for picture search forwards and backwards, plus slow motion, still frame and frame advance.
High-speed rewind on the Video8 transport: a 90-minute cassette is rewound in about one minute.
OPC (Optimum Picture Control) for picture adjustment and a LINE OUT SELECT switch that decides which deck feeds the output.
Two SCART sockets (EURO-AV and decoder connector) plus a separate line level with RCA and S-video — source and recorder can stay connected at the same time.
