Pioneer CT-656 Mark II – 3-head cassette deck with PC-OCC head, Dolby HX Pro, bias control and CD-deck synchro

A dedicated BIAS control on the front, with recording level and recording balance as separate knobs next to it: this Pioneer deck is aimed at anyone who likes to keep their cassette recordings in their own hands. At its core sits a hard permalloy record/playback head in PC-OCC design with a separate ferrite erase head, mounted on a zinc die-cast head base. Because the record and playback gaps work separately, the freshly recorded tape can be heard while recording and compared directly with the source.

At home the CT-656 Mark II belongs wherever cassettes still get played regularly: running a grown collection of Dolby B or C encoded tapes, dubbing CD and vinyl, or digitising old recordings on a computer. Its transport with a capstan servo motor and a separate reel motor achieves 0.05 % wow and flutter (WRMS) according to the service manual.

Highlights & Features

3-head transport: hard permalloy record/playback head in PC-OCC design with separate gaps plus a ferrite erase head on a zinc die-cast head base; off-tape monitoring via the MONITOR button, whose AUTO function switches to the tape signal automatically when recording or playback starts.
Drive with DC servo capstan motor and separate DC reel motor; single-capstan tape path with one pinch roller, cassette compartment with Cassette Stabilizer.
Dolby B and C selectable via separate buttons (ON/OFF and B/C); Dolby HX Pro is not noise reduction but adapts the bias during recording to the high-frequency content of the music signal; MPX filter switch on the rear panel for recordings from FM stereo broadcasts.
Manual fine tuning: BIAS control (– / +) to match the bias to tape type and source, recording level (REC LEVEL) and recording balance (REC BALANCE) adjustable separately; automatic tape selector for normal, chrome and metal tape.
FL peak level meter with 12 segments per channel and peak hold (PEAK HOLD MODE), switchable display range (METER RANGE WIDE/EXPAND); 4-digit electronic counter with tape counter, time counter for elapsed recording or playing time, and display off.
Music search across up to 15 selections forwards or backwards, recording mute for a 4-second blank between two tracks, and repeat playback.
CD-deck synchro recording with a matching Pioneer CD player via the CD-DECK SYNCHRO jack; timer switch REC / OFF / PLAY-REPEAT for timed recording or playback via an external audio timer.
Headphone jack on the front with its own level control (PHONES LEVEL).
