Technics RS-BX727 — 3-head cassette deck with quartz direct drive, HX Pro and manual bias/level calibration

Anyone who records their own cassettes wants to hear what actually ends up on the tape while recording. That is what the Technics RS-BX727 is built for: separate record and playback systems in the permalloy head block allow monitoring straight off the tape, and a quartz-controlled direct-drive motor turns the capstan without a belt. The front in the dark Technics finish combines a wide fluorescent display with a large recording level knob.

In everyday use the deck serves two purposes. It records vinyl, CDs or radio broadcasts and can be matched to the loaded cassette by hand with bias and level controls and a test-tone display. And it plays an existing collection with Dolby B or C decoded correctly, whether normal, chrome or metal tape.

Highlights & Features

3-head transport: permalloy record and playback heads in one housing plus a double-gap ferrite erase head; the MONITOR button switches between SOURCE and TAPE, the display shows the selected mode.
Capstan driven by a quartz-controlled direct-drive motor (marked DIGITAL SERVO QUARTZ DD), separate DC motor for the reel tables and motorised cassette holder.
Manual calibration: REC CAL switches on a test tone and the BIAS CAL. / LEVEL CAL. indicators; the BIAS control adjusts the frequency response, the LEVEL L/R controls match the recording sensitivity to the cassette.
Dolby B and Dolby C selectable, plus Dolby HX Pro: HX Pro is not noise reduction but adapts the bias to the high-frequency content of the signal for more headroom; MPX filter for Dolby recordings of FM stereo broadcasts.
Fluorescent level meter with fine scale up to +12 dB, switchable range (METER RANGE) and peak hold (APRS); normal, chrome or metal tape is detected and shown automatically.
TPS (Tape Program Search) to skip to the start of a track, counter switchable between tape count and time, memory stop at zero and A-B repeat via MEMORY REPEAT/STOP.
Large recording level knob with separate balance, auto rec mute for clean gaps between tracks and REC/OFF/PLAY timer switch for timed recording or playback with an external audio timer.
Infrared sensor on the front for remote control operation; headphone output with its own level control.
