Pioneer PDR-05 — CD recorder with stable platter mechanism and Legato Link Conversion S

First-generation CD recorders have become a rare sight — and the PDR-05 shows how seriously Pioneer approached the format in the nineties. Instead of a simple tray, the elaborate stable platter mechanism sits in the chassis, D/A conversion is handled by Pioneer’s own Legato Link Conversion S, and the whole unit rests on large feet. In short: a recording machine built like a high-quality CD player.

Accordingly it serves two roles — as a player in a stereo system and as a recorder that transfers vinyl records, tapes or digital sources to CD-R. Once finalized, self-recorded discs play on practically any CD player. Highlights & Features

Stable platter mechanism: the CD rests label-side down on a full-size platter and is read from above — the supported disc spins smoothly with little vibration.
D/A conversion with Pioneer’s Legato Link Conversion S; adjustable headphone output (6.3 mm) on the front panel.
CD-R recording: input selector for two digital inputs (optical and coaxial) and the analogue line input; Digital Synchro starts recording automatically with the source — for a single track or the complete disc.
Rec level and rec balance controls for analogue recordings, rec mute for blank passages, automatic or manual track numbering (Auto/Manual, Write), plus fade-in/fade-out.
Finalize writes the table of contents (TOC) — finalized CD-Rs then play on standard CD players.
Skip ID: unwanted tracks can be marked and skipped automatically during playback (Set/Clear, Skip Play On/Off).
Playback side: programmed playback of up to 24 tracks, random playback, display off; control in/out for integration into Pioneer system control setups.
