Pioneer VSX-405RDS – A/V Receiver in Black with Dolby Pro Logic and RDS Tuner

Four power amplifiers of equal output, a Dolby Pro Logic decoder and an RDS tuner in one chassis: with the VSX-405RDS, Pioneer brings home-cinema sound into the stereo system. Front channels, centre and rear speakers are driven directly by the unit, while an active subwoofer connects to its own pre-out. For plain stereo listening, switch the decoders off and use it as an integrated amplifier with phono input and two recording loops.

The FM/AM tuner remains fully usable and, thanks to RDS, shows the station name in the display. Please note: the rear panel carries audio sockets only. The picture signal from an LD or DVD player or a VCR goes straight to the TV set, the receiver handles the sound alone. It suits a system with turntable, CD player and TV that is to be extended by centre and effect speakers.

Highlights & Features

Dolby Pro Logic decoder with four power amplifiers of equal output (front L/R, centre, rear): centre and rear deliver 50 W each (DIN, 4 ohms), switched on at the unit via the DOLBY PRO LOGIC button.
SFC mode (Sound Field Control) with Studio and Simulated Surround settings for stereo sources.
FM/AM tuner with RDS: station name in the display, EON mode switches automatically to traffic or news programmes, PTY search by programme type; 30 station presets in three classes, station names can be entered via the CHARACTER button.
RF ATT button attenuates overly strong FM signals from local stations to avoid distortion.
Phono input for MM cartridges with ground terminal; line inputs CD and LD/DVD plus two recording loops (VCR/Tape 1, Tape 2 Monitor with off-tape monitoring).
Subwoofer pre-out (RCA) for connecting an active subwoofer.
Speaker A/B switching for two front pairs; tone controls with bass, treble, balance and switchable loudness.
Headphone jack (6.3 mm) on the front; Control Out socket for Pioneer system control (SR).
Note on the scope of delivery without remote control: according to the service documentation, the DIRECT function (tone control bypass) and FM mono switching (MPX) are only accessible via the remote control; all other functions including Dolby Pro Logic, SFC, station presets and input selection can be operated on the unit itself.
