Sony CDP-CX230 — 200-disc CD changer with CD Text, Disc Memo and group management

Anyone with a large CD collection spends a fair share of the listening time searching the shelf. This is where the CDP-CX230 comes in: 200 discs stay loaded in the carousel, and instead of leafing through jewel cases you turn the DISC/CHARACTER jog dial until the number or the name you gave the disc appears in the display – pressing the same dial starts playback. Label the discs and sort them into eight groups, and jazz, classical or film music are each one button press away.

As a source the changer connects to an amplifier or receiver, either analogue via RCA or digitally through the optical output to a D/A converter. It makes sense wherever music should run for hours without attention: in the living room, in the workshop, at a party or as the permanent source of a system. A pure playback unit without a recording function.

Highlights & Features

Rotary table for 200 CDs: discs are loaded with the front cover open, the jog dial brings up the desired slot and the display shows the disc number or the Disc Memo.
CD Text: disc title, artist and track names appear in the display; on multi-language CD Text discs the display language can be chosen, and the disc title is stored automatically as the Disc Memo.
Custom Files held in the unit’s memory for each slot: a Disc Memo of up to 13 characters can be typed in, Delete Bank permanently skips unwanted tracks, Group File sorts the discs into eight groups.
Memo Search on the player: enter a first character and browse all discs whose name begins with it using the jog dial.
Group Play: continuous or random playback within a single group; the eight groups can be given their own names via a Group Memo and called up directly with the GROUP 1–8 buttons.
Play modes: Continuous and Shuffle for all discs or one disc, plus Repeat for everything or a single track; the next disc can be pre-selected on the jog dial while another one is playing (NEXT DISC).
Three programs of up to 32 steps each, a step being a track or a whole disc; CHECK shows the order, CLEAR corrects it, and the programs stay stored.
Optical digital output (TOSLINK) for a DAC, an amplifier with a digital input or an MD or DAT recorder; the last disc played and the play mode are retained after switching off.
S-Link / Control A1 for joint operation with other Sony components and a Command Mode selector CD 1/2/3 so several Sony players can be addressed separately; infrared receiver on the front panel.
