Sony CDP-XB740 – CD player with Advanced Pulse D/A converter, four-step digital filter and dubbing functions

Placed between amplifier and digital recorder, this Sony player shows what it can do as soon as CDs are not only listened to but also copied. Besides the analogue RCA output there are an optical and a coaxial digital output, so an external DAC, a MiniDisc or a DAT recorder can be connected directly. Anyone recording to cassette finds the tools on the unit itself to fit a programme to the tape length and to fade tracks out smoothly. The CDP-XB740 has no recording function of its own – it is a playback-only machine.

For fine-tuning the sound, the FILTER rotary control to the left of the function keys switches between four characteristics of the digital filter. A headphone output on the front allows listening without an amplifier; the brushed front panel spans the full width of the unit and rests on large round feet.

Highlights & Features

Advanced Pulse D/A Converter with Variable Coefficient Digital Filter (printed on the front); filter characteristic selectable in four steps at the FILTER rotary control (STD, 1, 2, 3), switchable during playback.
Two digital outputs – optical (TOSLINK) and coaxial (RCA) – for an external DAC, a MiniDisc or DAT recorder or an amplifier with digital input.
CD Text playback (CD TEXT logo on the tray): disc title, artist and track names appear in the display, switched with TIME/TEXT; on multilingual CD Text discs LANGUAGE selects the display language.
AMS jog dial with push-enter for track selection, programming and time entry directly on the unit; programmes of up to 24 tracks, checked with CHECK, corrected with CLEAR, a pause separates tape sides A and B.
Time Edit and Just Edit (EDIT/TIME FADE key) automatically compile a programme to fit the tape length – C-46 to C-90, HALF or freely entered; Time Fade fades out automatically after a preset playing time.
FADER for manual fade-in and fade-out on the analogue output, fade time adjustable from 2 to 10 seconds.
PEAK SEARCH finds the loudest passage on the disc for setting the recorder level; AUTO SPACE inserts 3-second gaps between tracks so the cassette deck's music search can find them later.
MUSIC SCAN plays the first 10, 20 or 30 seconds of each track; PLAY MODE switches between continuous, shuffle and programme play, REPEAT repeats one track, the whole disc or the programme.
Display with music calendar, track, index and time display (playing time, remaining time of track, remaining time of disc); headphone output, 6.3 mm jack, on the front.
CONTROL A1II connection for system control together with other Sony components; infrared remote sensor on the front.
