Sony DXA-D9 — dual cassette deck with built-in amplifier, supplied with the ST-D9L tuner

Two components of a Sony system change hands together here: the DXA-D9, a dual cassette deck with a built-in amplifier section, and the matching ST-D9L tuner. The DXA-D9 is the heart of the pair — it takes the sources, controls the volume and drives the loudspeakers. The ST-D9L adds radio. It has no RCA outputs of its own: it works together with the DXA-D9 through the system control connection and is therefore not intended for stand-alone use.

Anyone with cassettes still on the shelf gets a tape centre with two transports. A turntable, a CD player and the audio of a video source can be connected, as can a microphone on the front panel. Together with a pair of loudspeakers this makes a complete small system — for a study, a hobby room or a guest room where a full-size hi-fi chain will not fit.

Highlights & Features

Dual cassette transport: deck A and deck B both record and play back, each with auto reverse — the tape continues at the end of the side without turning the cassette over.
High Speed Synchro Dubbing: deck-to-deck copying at normal or double speed (A+B Rec, High Speed and Normal Speed keys).
Twin Rec with Full Logical Control: recording on both transports; the transport keys are electronically controlled.
Relay: when deck A has finished, deck B takes over for long unattended playback. Deck B start key, auto pause and Dir Mode slide switch included.
Dolby B and Dolby C noise reduction, selected on a slide switch (Off / B / C); Dolby C reduces tape hiss considerably further than Dolby B.
AMS and Blank Skip: track search using the pauses between recordings, unrecorded passages are skipped.
Microphone input (6.3 mm jack) on the front panel with mixing volume: voice and programme source can be balanced against each other while recording.
Amplifier section with source selection for Video, Tape, CD, Tuner and Phono, slide controls for bass, treble and balance, Dual DOL (loudness) and a muting key; volume is set with a rocker key.
Timer slide switch (Rec / Off / Play) for time-controlled recording and playback via an external timer.
Tape loop for a graphic equaliser via separate RCA sockets (Graphic Equalizer In and Out).
Phono input with earth terminal for a turntable, headphone jack (6.3 mm) on the front, three-digit tape counter with reset, fluorescent display and an AC outlet on the rear panel.
ST-D9L: FM tuner with 20 station presets, numeric keypad 0–9 with Memory and Enter, Memory Scan, auto/manual switching and tuning +/−; the display shows band, frequency, preset and stereo reception. MW and LW bands are also present, but are no longer broadcast in Germany.
Operation via the supplied original Sony RM-L105 remote control: source selection Video, Tape, CD, Tuner and Phono, numeric keys 1–20, tape transport including record, volume and muting.
