Sony MDS-303 — MiniDisc recorder with Shock Resistant Memory and optical digital interface

Vibrations do not throw this transport off track: a buffer memory — prominently labelled Shock Resistant Memory on Sony’s front panel — bridges brief disturbances while the disc is being read, before they become audible. The MDS-303 is one of the early MiniDisc decks in the classic 43 cm component format and is designed as a full recorder: it records MiniDiscs, lets you edit them afterwards and, of course, plays them back.

In a stereo system the deck thus takes over the role that long belonged to the cassette deck — only digitally: recordings end up on a medium that stays protected from dust and scratches inside its cartridge and can be re-recorded several times; individual tracks are directly accessible without winding. If you want to record radio programmes, create your own compilations or digitise vinyl records, this is a fitting recording machine in component format.
