Sony MDS-503 — MiniDisc recorder with sampling rate converter and optical plus coaxial digital input

Three input paths, one recording target: the recorder accepts digital signals either via optical fibre or coaxial cable, while analogue sources run through the RCA inputs with their own level control. A sampling rate converter sits in the digital path, so besides CD signals at 44.1 kHz, sources running at 32 or 48 kHz — a DAT deck, for instance — can be recorded straight to MiniDisc; three LEDs on the front show which sampling rate is present. Operation is handled by the AMS push-enter rotary knob, a key block for transport and editing, and a large display whose readout can be switched by key.

In a stereo rack the MDS-503 takes on the job of recording and compiling music, whether from CD, DAT or an analogue source. With an external timer it also works unattended, and for listening away from the loudspeakers a headphone output with its own level control is provided on the front panel.
