Sony MDS-JE440 — MiniDisc recorder with ATRAC DSP TYPE-R and optical digital input

The MiniDisc brings together two qualities that rarely meet: it can be re-recorded again and again, yet every track is available at the press of a button. This deck in the classic component format is built for exactly that — a full recorder that writes discs, rearranges them afterwards and plays them back.

In a hi-fi system the MDS-JE440 takes over the job that once belonged to the cassette deck, only without winding times: radio recordings, personal compilations or digitised records live on a disc inside its protective shell that can be overwritten at any time. Anyone still holding a collection of recorded MiniDiscs gets a machine that plays it and keeps adding to it. The deck has no digital output; playback runs through the analogue RCA sockets into an amplifier or receiver.

Highlights & Features

ATRAC DSP TYPE-R: the further developed Sony coding, marked on the front panel. It reassigns processing power during recording (Intelligent Bit Reallocation Algorithm).
MDLP with ATRAC3: extended recording times on a single disc when playing time matters more than the standard setting.
Optical digital input (TOSLINK): recording straight from a digital source without passing through analogue stages. Alternatively the deck records in analogue form via the RCA inputs.
REC MODE and INPUT as dedicated front panel keys: recording mode and source are reachable without searching a menu.
AMS rotary control with push enter for direct track selection; MENU/NO, YES and CLEAR guide you through editing recorded discs.
PLAY MODE and REPEAT for various playback and repeat modes; LEVEL/DISPLAY/CHAR and SCROLL for track and disc titling in the display.
