Sony SCD-XE597 — Super Audio CD player with analogue 5.1-channel output

Anyone with a shelf of Super Audio CDs needs a transport that actually reads the high-density SA-CD layer. The SCD-XE597 does so with a dual-laser pickup that scans either the Super Audio CD or the conventional audio CD, depending on wavelength. On the SA-CD layer the music is stored in DSD format: a sampling rate 64 times that of CD, 1-bit quantisation, handled by a Super Audio D/A converter.

That covers both worlds. Connected to a stereo amplifier it serves as a source for Super Audio CD and CD; connected to a multi-channel or AV amplifier it delivers the up to 5.1 channels of a multi-channel Super Audio CD in the analogue domain. It cannot record — it is a playback-only unit in a slim chassis.

Highlights & Features

Plays Super Audio CDs (single-layer and hybrid discs) as well as audio CDs; the SA-CD/CD key selects the SA-CD layer or the CD layer on hybrid discs.
MULTI/2CH key for the playback area of a Super Audio CD: multi-channel area or 2-channel area; the default area can be set in the menu.
Analogue 5.1-channel output (front L/R, surround L/R, centre, subwoofer) for multi-channel playback; for stereo use the FRONT L/R jacks alone are sufficient.
Multi-channel management via the built-in DSD DSP: speakers can be set to large or small, plus the direct modes 2ch DIRECT and Mch DIRECT.
Output level balance for surround, centre and subwoofer in up to 24 steps, optionally with test tone — via the rotary control on the unit or from the listening position by remote.
Speaker distance for front, surround, centre and subwoofer adjustable from 1.0 to 7.0 m in 0.1 m steps, in case the amplifier offers no menu of its own.
CD Text display: TIME/TEXT switches between track time, remaining disc time and TEXT information; on multilingual TEXT discs the display language can be changed.
Repeat playback (whole disc or single track), shuffle playback and programme playback with up to 32 steps; track selection via the AMS rotary control with push-enter.
Optical digital output for digital dubbing, for example to an MD deck; it carries the signals of conventional CDs only, not those of the SA-CD layer.
