Sony CDP-XB630 — CD player with Advanced Pulse D/A converter, optical digital output and CD Text

A CD player that lends a hand when you copy discs: the CDP-XB630 from Sony’s QS line comes with the functions that matter when recording to cassette or MiniDisc — a peak search before recording, programmes tailored to the tape length, fade-in and fade-out at the touch of a button. Conversion is handled by Sony’s Advanced Pulse D/A converter, while the untouched digital signal is also available at the optical output, for an external DAC or a digital recorder, for instance.

The player is meant as a source in a stereo system with an integrated amplifier or receiver; anyone who prefers to listen without a system uses the headphone output on the front. Most operation takes place on the unit itself: the large AMS dial selects tracks and confirms entries with a push, the remaining functions sit on labelled keys below the display. The CDP-XB630 cannot record — it is a playback-only machine for audio CDs.

Time Edit and Just Edit (EDIT/TIME FADE key) compile a programme to fit the tape length (HALF, C-46 to C-90 or entered freely) and insert the pause for side B; Time Fade fades out automatically after a preset playing time.
FADER for manual fade-in and fade-out with an adjustable fade time of 2 to 10 seconds.
PEAK SEARCH locates the loudest passage on the disc for setting the recording level; AUTO SPACE inserts 3-second blanks between tracks.
MUSIC SCAN plays the beginning of each track (10, 20 or 30 seconds), PLAY MODE for programme and shuffle play, REPEAT for one track or the whole disc; via the remote additionally A-B repeat and reduction of the output level (LINE OUT LEVEL, down to −20 dB).
Display with music calendar, track, index and time readout (playing time, remaining time of the track, remaining time of the disc); headphone output 6.3 mm jack on the front, without its own volume control.
Control A1II connector for integration into a Sony system; infrared remote sensor on the front.
