Sony CDP-XB720 — CD player with Advanced Pulse D/A converter, selectable digital filter and CD Text

Built to slot into an existing stereo system, this player leaves the choice between the analogue and the digital route: via RCA the signal goes to the amplifier, via optical or coaxial cable to a DAC or a digital recorder. When copying to cassette or MiniDisc, the built-in edit and fade functions help to assemble programmes to match the tape length and to fade them out cleanly. The unit cannot record itself — it is a playback-only machine.

On the sound side the CDP-XB720 relies on Sony’s Advanced Pulse D/A converter combined with a variable coefficient digital filter whose characteristic can be switched in four steps at the rotary control on the front. A brushed full-width front panel, large round feet and the QS emblem mark the build; a headphone output on the front allows listening without an amplifier.

PEAK SEARCH locates the loudest passage on the disc for setting the recording level; AUTO SPACE inserts 3-second blanks between tracks.
MUSIC SCAN to sample each track (10, 20 or 30 seconds), PLAY MODE for programme and shuffle play, REPEAT for repeating one track or the whole disc.
Display with music calendar, track, index and time display (playing time, remaining time of track, remaining time of disc); headphone output, 6.3 mm jack, on the front.
S-Link/Control A1 connection for integration into a Sony system; infrared remote sensor on the front.
