Sony TC-K490 — 3-head stereo cassette deck with tape monitor, Dolby B/C, HX Pro and bias control

Hear what is actually going onto the tape: on the TC-K490 the MONITOR button switches from the input signal to the freshly recorded tape while recording is in progress. This is made possible by a 3-head transport in which recording and playback use their own head gaps. Anyone who levels their cassettes carefully can judge recording level and bias by ear straight away, instead of checking the result only after rewinding.

Sony clearly designed this stereo cassette deck around recording, yet it plays back an existing collection just as reliably. It connects to any amplifier or receiver with a tape loop via two pairs of RCA jacks. That makes it a good fit for new recordings from vinyl, CD or radio, for transferring old tapes to a computer, and for anyone who wants to work with a deck that has a clearly laid-out front panel and a few well-placed controls.

Highlights & Features

3-head transport (front marking “3 HEAD”) with MONITOR button for off-tape monitoring: during recording you can switch between the source and the tape being recorded.
Dolby B and Dolby C noise reduction, selected via the DOLBY NR rotary switch (OFF / B / C); Dolby HX Pro (front marking “DOLBY B-C NR HX PRO”) is not noise reduction but optimises the bias when recording treble-rich music.
BIAS rotary control (− / +) for manual fine-tuning of the bias to the tape in use – directly audible in combination with off-tape monitoring.
Transport with two motors (marking “2 MOTOR TRANSPORT MECHANISM”), operated via soft-touch buttons for stop, play, pause, rec mute, record, fast forward and rewind.
AMS track search, triggered via the wind buttons (marking “◀◀ AMS ▶▶” below the button panel).
Wide peak level meter (PEAK LEVEL METER) in the display window for checking recording levels.
Large REC LEVEL rotary control (scale 0–10) and separate BALANCE control; switchable MPX filter for Dolby recordings from FM broadcasts.
Tape counter with RESET and MEMORY buttons; headphone jack (HEADPHONES) on the front.
