Technics RS-B40 — cassette deck with dbx, Dolby B/C, MX head and microphone inputs

Anyone wanting to bring old dbx cassettes from their own collection back to life, or to make new recordings with wide dynamic range, will find the RS-B40 a clearly laid-out tool for the job. Technics pairs dbx noise reduction with Dolby B and Dolby C in this deck, so almost any recorded cassette can be played back with the matching decoding. Recording and playback run through an MX combination head, while a separate double-gap ferrite head handles erasure.

Day-to-day operation stays simple: choose the tape type at the press of a button, set level and balance on slide controls and follow the recording level on the red fluorescent display. Two microphone jacks on the front allow speech and live recordings without a mixer. At just under 10 cm tall, the unit also fits into shallow shelf compartments of a classic hi-fi system.

Highlights & Features

Three noise reduction systems selectable from one row of buttons: Dolby B, Dolby C or dbx (dynamic range 110 dB with dbx, signal-to-noise ratio up to 92 dB); dbx-encoded cassettes are played back with correct decoding.
2-head transport with MX combination head for recording and playback and double-gap ferrite erase head; front print “2 motor MX head”.
Separate motors for capstan and reel table drive (RS-8R mechanism series).
Manual tape type selection via three buttons for normal, CrO2 and metal tape.
Fluorescent level meter for left and right channels for precise level setting.
Slide controls for input level (0–10) and balance (left/center/right), plus rec mute for inserting gaps between tracks.
Transport buttons with indicators for rec, pause and play; three-digit tape counter with reset button.
Timer switch (rec/off/play) for timer-controlled recording or playback.
Two microphone jacks (L/R) and headphone output as 6.3 mm jacks on the front.
