Akai GX-95 — cassette deck from the Reference Master range with a 3-head configuration, closed-loop double capstan and direct drive

Hearing what actually ends up on the tape while recording: that is what the separate record and playback heads of the GX-95 are for. The MONITOR button switches between source and tape during operation, so a mistaken recording level shows up immediately instead of on later playback. Akai built the deck accordingly — separated blocks, a rigid chassis, heavy feet and just over ten kilograms of mass keep vibration away from the tape path.

A deck like this is meant for anyone who does not only play cassettes but records them: own compilations, radio recordings or dubs straight from CD and DAT, each matched to the tape in use. It plays back older collections just as well, from plain ferric tape to metal.

Highlights & Features

3-head transport with separate record and playback heads (Super GX, LC-OFC windings) and a dedicated erase head: the MONITOR TAPE/SOURCE switch provides off-tape monitoring while recording.
Closed-loop double capstan: two capstan shafts, each with its own pinch roller, guide the tape before and after the heads and keep tension constant in the head area — wow and flutter is 0.025 % (WRMS).
Direct-drive capstan with an FG servo motor, plus a second motor for the reels and a third for the cam, loading and eject; microprocessor-controlled loading and ejecting runs quietly (STOP/EJECT CLOSE).
Manual tape calibration on the front panel: CALIBRATION LEVEL (−3 to +3) and BIAS (−20 to +20) with a CAL ON/OFF switch match recording level and bias to the cassette in use; the tape type itself is detected automatically (type I, type II, type IV).
Dolby B and Dolby C reduce tape hiss, selectable via DOLBY NR (B-TYPE/C-TYPE) and ON/OFF. Dolby HX Pro is not noise reduction: it adjusts the bias dynamically during recording and thus provides more headroom in the treble; it can be switched separately.
Switchable MPX filter for Dolby recordings from FM stereo, plus a CD/DAT DIRECT input with its own front switch that feeds the source to the transport without passing through the amplifier.
Large fluorescent display with peak level indication and peak hold, switchable off via the DISPLAY button; digital tape counter with memory (COUNTER RESET/MEMORY) and memory stop.
Recording conveniences: IPSS track search across up to 16 tracks, A-B repeat, REC CANCEL to undo a recording, AUTO MUTE for clean blank sections and spot erase for individual passages.
Cassette holder with vibration damping (vibration absorbing cassette stabilizer), automatic tape slack take-up and auto monitor system; a large dual REC LEVEL control for both channels.
Front headphone output with its own PHONES LEVEL control, a REC/OFF/PLAY timer switch for recording or playback via an external timer, and an auto play function.
Remote sensor on the front; a suitable replacement remote control is supplied (not the original RC-G95).
Head adjustment access behind the cassette compartment (TILT/HEIGHT and AZIMUTH) for precise alignment of the heads during service.
