Kenwood KX-5550 — auto-reverse cassette deck with 3 motors, Dolby B/C, HX Pro, Auto Bias and motor-driven record level control

Recording and playing cassettes in both directions without getting up to turn them over – that is what Kenwood built the KX-5550 stereo cassette deck for. At the end of the tape the transport reverses on its own, so a long cassette runs from the first to the last minute without interruption. Much of what remains manual work on simpler decks is handled by the unit itself: it detects the tape type, calibrates the cassette before recording and moves the level control by motor when fading in and out.

This makes the deck a good fit for long recordings from vinyl, CD or radio as well as for relaxed listening to entire cassette collections. Owners of Kenwood components with a system control socket can link it up via control cable, so that a CD player and the deck start together, for example. At 44 cm wide it fits into any standard hi-fi rack.

Highlights & Features

Auto reverse for playback and recording: the DIRECTION key selects playback of one side, both sides or endless operation; recordings run on one or both sides.
“3 Motor Silent Mechanism”: two DC motors for tape transport plus a dedicated mode motor for the transport functions; power loading system – the cassette door opens and closes by motor via the OPEN/CLOSE key.
Dolby B and Dolby C noise reduction; Dolby HX Pro is not noise reduction but adjusts the bias during recording when the music is rich in treble – more high-frequency headroom, also when the tape is played on other decks.
AUTO BIAS with fine tuning (Auto Bias Fine Tuning): the deck calibrates the loaded cassette for the right bias in about 45 seconds; BIAS PRESET stores the value separately for normal, chrome and metal tape. The tape type is detected automatically.
Motor-driven REC LEVEL control: AUTO FADER fades recordings in or out smoothly, the knob moves to 0 by itself and returns to its previous position at the press of a key; REC BALANCE for matching the left and right channels.
CCRS (Computer Controlled CD Recording System): together with a Kenwood CD player with system control connection the deck sets the right recording level itself and then starts recording automatically; synchro recording with a Kenwood CD player or turntable via system control.
DPSS music search (up to 16 tracks forward or back), INDEX SCAN plays the first 10 seconds or so of each track, single-track repeat, REPEAT A-B, Rewind & Play and Dash & Play, which skips longer blank sections in fast forward.
Recording aids: blank spaces of about 4 seconds at the press of a key, restart of a failed recording with automatic rewind to the start point, and Zero Stop to counter reading 0.00.
Fluorescent display with peak level meter for both channels, multi-way counter and indicators for tape type, Dolby and tape direction; MPX filter for Dolby recordings from FM radio; TIMER switch (REC/OFF/PLAY) for recording or playback with an external timer; headphone socket on the front.
