Panasonic SL-VM525 — Five-Disc Video CD Changer with Karaoke Features

Five discs on a carousel, two microphone jacks on the front and a video output on the back: the Panasonic SL-VM525 combines a CD changer, a Video CD player and a karaoke unit in a standard full-width hi-fi chassis. Besides audio CDs it reads Video CDs of versions 1.1 and 2.0 as well as CD+G discs with on-screen lyrics. The picture reaches the TV via a composite output, and a switch on the rear panel sets the video standard to PAL or NTSC.

The SL-VM525 comes into its own at a karaoke night in the living room or a party room: the music runs through the amplifier, picture and lyrics appear on the TV, and you sing along live. Video CD collectors get a fitting source for their library, and in pure audio use the changer covers long listening sessions with five CDs without swapping discs. It is a playback-only unit without a recording function.

Highlights & Features

Five-disc carousel: with the drawer open, two trays are accessible and DISC SKIP rotates the carousel; discs can also be exchanged during playback. Direct disc selection via DISC 1–5 buttons with loading indication.
Video CD version 1.1 and 2.0: with version 2.0, PBC (Play Back Control) handles playback via on-screen menus and shows high-resolution still pictures; RETURN goes back to the menu.
Two microphone inputs (6.3 mm jack) on the front with separately adjustable level via the dual MIC VOLUME control, plus a three-stage echo effect (ECHO 1–3).
Key Control: the key of the backing music can be raised or lowered in semitone steps by up to three steps – handy when a song sits too high or too low for your voice.
KARAOKE/DUAL: Voice Mute removes the vocal part from stereo recordings; MONO-L and MONO-R select the backing music or the vocal track on multiplex karaoke discs.
Plays audio CDs and CD+G (CD Graphics) discs, which carry still pictures and lyrics alongside the music.
Program memory for up to 32 tracks from all five discs; direct track selection via the numeric keypad on the front.
MASH 1-bit D/A conversion (multi-stage noise shaping) and Digital Servo System.
On-screen display: with Video CDs the changer shows operating status such as disc, track and program step on the TV.
No remote control is included. According to the manual, random play, repeat, resume, multi-screen preview, frame advance/slow motion, V-index search, scene selection and switching off the on-screen display are only available via the remote control; all other functions are operated directly on the unit.
