Yamaha BD-A1010 — Aventage 3D Blu-ray player with SA-CD playback and 7.1 analogue output

Aventage is Yamaha’s name for its more elaborately built line of components, and the BD-A1010 carries that lettering on its front: weighing a good four kilograms and measuring 316 millimetres deep, it is noticeably more substantial than a basic disc spinner. Inside works a universal drive that reads not only Blu-ray and DVD but also Super Audio CD and DVD-Audio — formats that would otherwise call for a separate machine in the rack.

The player therefore takes on two roles at once: as a home cinema source that passes HD audio formats on via HDMI, and as a source for focused music listening, where Pure Direct silences the display and the video output. Anyone with an older amplifier without HDMI can take multichannel sound from the eight analogue RCA outputs. A pure playback device with no recording function.
