Kenwood DP-7020 — CD player with 20 direct-access keys, optical digital output and variable line output

Twenty labelled track keys to the right of the tray define the front of this Kenwood player: every track on a CD starts with a single press, and the indicator dots in the keys double as a music calendar showing which tracks the loaded disc contains. The DP-7020 is a full-width hi-fi component standing on four large metal feet, with the lettering “Linear Skate Disc Loading Mechanism” printed below the tray.

In the rack it serves as a source for an integrated amplifier, a receiver or an external DAC with optical input. Owners of a Kenwood system can link it to the shared system control via the System Control jacks. It is a pure playback unit without a recording function, yet its editing features support copying CDs to cassette.

Highlights & Features

Twenty direct-access keys (1–20) plus a +10 key on the front panel: tracks are selected directly without stepping through the skip keys; the indicators in the keys form the music calendar of the loaded disc.
Optical digital output (Toslink) for a DAC, amplifier or receiver with an optical digital input.
Two analogue output pairs: LINE OUTPUT FIXED with a fixed level and LINE OUTPUT VARIABLE, whose level is set with the OUTPUT LEVEL control on the front or via the remote control – handy for matching other components of the system.
Headphone jack on the front; the volume is set with the same OUTPUT LEVEL control.
Program memory for up to 20 tracks in any order, with CHECK, CLEAR and the option to insert or add individual program steps.
EDIT function for cassette recording: enter the tape length in minutes (up to 99) and the player automatically compiles the tracks that fit completely on the side; SPACE inserts a pause of about 4 seconds between tracks.
TIME mode: playback starts from a freely chosen time position within a track.
Repeat of one track or the whole disc, A-B repeat of a section, random play (RANDOM) and index search; according to the manual, program, EDIT, TIME, RANDOM, A-B and index are operated via the remote control.
Time display switchable in four steps (track elapsed/remaining, disc or program total/remaining), DISPLAY OFF key to switch the display off, emphasis indicator in the display.
System Control (Kenwood XS): operation via the system remote of a Kenwood amplifier and CCRS level matching when recording to a Kenwood cassette deck; start via an external audio timer is possible (timer play).
