Sony EV-C3E — compact Video8 recorder with editing functions

Anyone who wants to watch Video8 cassettes from a camcorder on the television without plugging in the camera every time gets a stationary 8mm recorder in a small format with the EV-C3E. At just 178 mm wide, the unit fits next to the TV, on a shelf or on a desk. Sony designed it expressly as a playback and editing machine for home-made tapes: there is no built-in tuner, recordings are made via the line input from an external source.

Its typical job is reviewing and sorting old family footage: play tapes, cue scenes precisely and pass the signal via RCA or SCART to a DVD recorder or a capture card for digitising. Sound is recorded and played back in mono on the FM track; PCM audio tracks from other 8mm machines are not reproduced by the EV-C3E.

Highlights & Features

Video8 playback and recording in SP and LP; the recording speed is selected with the SP/LP button on the front, and the display shows the mode.
Synchro Edit: via the CONTROL L (LANC) socket the EV-C3E starts a connected Sony camcorder or second Sony recorder in sync with its own recording. The LANC M/S switch sets whether the EV-C3E controls (M) or is controlled (S).
Assemble editing: compile scenes from several tapes one after another onto a blank cassette; without a control cable by releasing pause on both machines at the same time.
Insert editing: insert scenes into an already recorded tape; the tape counter marks the end point at which recorder and source automatically enter pause.
EDIT button with indicator: a dedicated operating mode for dubbing that conditions the picture while copying.
Tape counter with COUNTER RESET and GO TO ZERO: a marked position is located again automatically at the press of a button.
Still picture (PAUSE/STILL) and picture search forwards and backwards on the unit; the RMT-463 infrared remote adds slow motion at 1/5 and 1/10 of normal speed, frame-by-frame advance and double speed with sound.
SLOW/STILL ADJUST: two front-panel buttons to remove streaks and vertical jitter from still and slow-motion pictures.
Auto rewind at the end of the tape; if desired, playback starts by itself after rewinding (auto play).
RF modulator with adjustable UHF channel 30 to 39 and DX/LOCAL switch — a television without AV input can be connected via the aerial socket.
