Yamaha CDX-890 — CD player with separate FIXED and VARIABLE outputs, optical and coaxial digital output

Two pairs of cinch sockets on the rear show how flexibly the CDX-890 can be integrated: the FIXED pair passes the unaltered level to the amplifier, while the VARIABLE pair follows the OUTPUT LEVEL control on the front. The player therefore serves a classic CD or AUX input just as well as active speakers or a power amplifier that need an adjustable level. The Natural Sound front looks calm because a door conceals the numeric keys and programming functions; only the power switch, disc tray, transport keys, headphone jack and level control remain in view.

The unit shows its strengths between amplifier and cassette deck. Many of its functions are designed to get CDs cleanly onto tape – from fitting the tracks to both sides of the cassette to setting the level before recording. Digitally, the player can also be connected to a DAT or MiniDisc recorder or an external converter.

Highlights & Features

Separate line outputs: FIXED with a constant level for the amplifier input, VARIABLE adjustable via the OUTPUT LEVEL control – for instance for active speakers or a power amplifier without its own volume control.
Two digital outputs, optical (Toslink) and coaxial (cinch), for connecting an external D/A converter, an amplifier with digital input or a DAT or MiniDisc recorder.
Tape programming for cassette recordings: after entering the tape length, the unit automatically distributes the tracks to side A and B in original or random order; alternatively you choose the tracks for each side yourself while the remaining tape time is displayed.
Peak Search: the player looks for the loudest passage on the disc and plays it in a loop, so the recording level on the cassette deck can be set without hurry.
Auto Space inserts pauses of about 4 seconds between the tracks when dubbing, so that the cassette deck’s music search later finds the start of each track reliably.
Programmed playback of up to 25 tracks, random playback, repeat of a single track or the entire disc, and index search within a track.
Control door on the front: behind it are the numeric keys (+10, 1–9, 0) for direct track selection as well as the programming and tape functions.
Display with four selectable time readouts and a track calendar that hides tracks already played; 6.3 mm headphone jack with level control on the front.
