Onkyo DV-SP504E — Super Audio CD & DVD-Audio/Video player with HDMI and 5.1 analogue output

Music from Super Audio CD and DVD-Audio, films from DVD-Video: the DV-SP504E brings both together in a slim black chassis just 81 mm high. Onkyo explicitly labels the unit a Super Audio CD & DVD Audio/Video Player and relies on Direct Digital Path and its in-house Vector Linear Shaping Circuitry on every channel for signal processing. Operation is handled by a few clearly labelled keys and a cursor pad with push-to-enter; the front display can be dimmed in three steps.

The player makes sense wherever an SACD or DVD-Audio collection lives alongside a home cinema: connected to an AV receiver it delivers picture and sound over HDMI or feeds multi-channel sound in analogue form, while a stereo amplifier simply takes one of the two front pairs, onto which the unit automatically downmixes multi-channel material. It cannot record — it is a playback-only unit whose strength lies in disc playback.

192 kHz/24-bit audio D/A converter with VLSC (Vector Linear Shaping Circuitry) on all channels; 108 MHz/14-bit video D/A converter.
Dolby Digital and DTS decoders on board, complemented by a Dolby Pro Logic decoder for two-channel material; 5.1 analogue output with speaker configuration (size, level, distance) for receivers without their own decoder. Note: SACD and the multi-channel area of DVD-Audio are output exclusively via the analogue outputs, not via HDMI, coaxial or optical.
Two parallel stereo pairs FRONT/D.MIX 1 and 2 with automatic downmix; the SURR MODE 1+2 switch activates the second surround pair, which carries the same signals as SURR 1 — intended for receivers with a 7.1 analogue input.
Playback functions: repeat, A-B repeat, random, memory programme playback, last memory, slow motion, zoom; parental lock, screen saver and dynamic range control.
SCART output selectable as RGB, S-video or composite; RI jacks (REMOTE CONTROL) for system linking with Onkyo components.
