Sony EV-S550E — Video8 home recorder with PCM digital audio

Family recordings from the late eighties often sit on Video8 cassettes — and the camcorder that made them stopped working long ago. This stationary 8mm home deck from Sony was built for exactly that situation: it plays Video8 tapes without a camcorder and feeds the signal via RCA or SCART to a television, DVD recorder or a capture card on the computer. Old archives can be viewed, sorted and digitised in comfort.

The audio section stands out: besides FM hi-fi stereo, the EV-S550E also masters digital PCM sound — equipment that earned it a place in ambitious editing setups back in the day and makes it interesting for audio-only recordings today. Its extensive editing functions still make the recorder a versatile hub for everything stored on 8mm tape.

Also usable as a digital audio recorder: via the line-in audio jacks the deck records audio signals alone onto the PCM track — for concert and radio recordings or for transferring old tapes. A P5-90 cassette runs for 3 hours in LP mode; for the PCM track Sony quotes 20 Hz to 15 kHz, more than 88 dB dynamic range and less than 0.005 % wow and flutter (RMS). Levels are set by hand with the REC LEVEL controls and the level display, monitored on the adjustable headphone output.
Edit Shuttle (jog dial) with recorder/player switching and Edit Standby; Synchro Edit controls a Sony camcorder or a second recorder in sync via the Control L (LANC) jack, insert editing possible.
Front flap with second AV input (Line In 2), microphone input, adjustable headphone output and DC output to power a Sony 8mm camcorder.
Still picture and slow motion with slow/still adjustment; sharpness control for picture tuning.
Timer for up to six programmed recordings per month plus quick timer for instant recordings.
