Sony SL-HF950 — Super Beta hi-fi recorder for collectors and Beta archives

A chapter of video history in its most advanced form: with Super Beta recording and Beta hi-fi stereo sound, the SL-HF950 ranks among the top models of Sony's Betamax line-up. Because VHS ultimately won the format contest, machines of this class remained comparatively rare — which is why well-preserved examples are sought after by collectors of the format today.

The recorder is not only interesting as a collector's piece, though. Anyone with Betamax cassettes still on the shelf gains a fully equipped playback source: via the Euroconnector, the BNC video output and the RCA audio outputs, old recordings can be fed cleanly into capture hardware or a DVD recorder and preserved for good. The PAL/SECAM version also handles SECAM material. And if you wish, it doubles as a pure audio recorder: SOUND mode records sound without a picture. No remote control is included with this unit; all functions including the timer are accessible on the machine itself and behind the front flap.

Highlights & Features

Super Beta recording with selectable operating mode (Normal / Super Beta, STD/PRO switch): in PRO mode the FM carrier of the luminance signal is shifted up by 500 kHz — with high-grade tapes, picture resolution and luminance signal-to-noise ratio improve.
Beta hi-fi stereo sound (PAL): frequency-modulated audio recorded directly in the video track; a conventional mono longitudinal track is recorded in parallel so the cassettes remain playable on machines without hi-fi sound.
Adjustable audio recording: peak programme meter with sliders for the recording level, display switchable to Beta hi-fi tracking; switchable MPX filter for recordings from FM sources; audio monitor selection CH1/2, CH1 or CH2.
Audio-only recording: in SOUND mode the recorder captures sound signals without a picture — concert or radio recordings from the hi-fi system, for example. An L-750 cassette runs for 3 hours 15 minutes in one go; the Beta hi-fi audio covers 20 Hz to 20 kHz with more than 80 dB dynamic range and less than 0.005 % wow and flutter (WRMS). The audio recording can also be started by timer.
Editing functions: audio, video and audio/video insert adds new scenes or soundtracks to recorded tapes; the Edit switch bypasses the picture processing circuit during dubbing for higher-quality copies.
Playback functions: still frame with frame-by-frame advance, slow motion (1/5 and 1/10), double-speed playback, x9 picture search, index marks with search, Go To Zero and skip scan.
Timer for 6 recordings within three weeks, quick timer direct programming, quartz-controlled clock.
Microphone input and adjustable headphone output on the front; sharpness control (soft/sharp) and tracking controls (normal/slow) behind the front flap.
