Sony EV-S850PS — Video8 recorder with Digital Multi Audio System

Six digital stereo audio tracks on one 8mm cassette: Sony designed the EV-S850PS explicitly as a digital-audio video recorder. In digital multi audio mode this stationary Video8 deck records audio only, in PCM quality, using the full width of the tape with each track running the entire tape length. Record level sliders, a peak level display and microphone inputs sit on the front panel just as on a tape recorder, making the unit a serious audio recorder for radio recordings, transfers and your own sessions.

As a video recorder it plays Video8 cassettes from camcorders and delivers picture and sound via SCART or RCA to a television, DVD recorder or a capture card on the computer, so old 8mm archives can be viewed and digitised. With Control L and Control S connections, Synchro Edit and a jog/shuttle dial it also serves as player or recorder in an editing setup with other Sony equipment.

Audio credentials documented in the manual: for the PCM sound Sony quotes a sampling frequency of 31.25 kHz, 20 Hz to 15 kHz frequency response, more than 90 dB dynamic range and less than 0.005 % wow and flutter (RMS). Levels are set manually with the L/R REC LEVEL sliders (scale 0–10) and the peak program meter and monitored on the adjustable headphone output; two microphone inputs (L/R) are provided for your own recordings.
PCM digital audio (2 channels) on video recordings in addition to the FM standard track; audio dub adds sound to recorded tapes afterwards on the PCM track (line input or microphone); audio monitor switches between PCM, mix and standard track as well as main/sub sound.
Flying erase head for clean, glitch-free edit transitions.
Editing functions: Synchro Edit starts playback and recording on two machines simultaneously, as player for assemble editing, as recorder for automatic insert editing; control via Control L (5-pin, master/slave selectable) or Control S in/out; edit button, PFS (Picture Fine Select) and sharpness control for tapes from other machines.
Jog/shuttle dial: jog from frame-by-frame to normal speed forwards and backwards, shuttle ring for 1/5 slow motion, normal and double speed up to picture search; still picture, x2 button and slow/still adjustment.
Index function: mark and erase index signals, index search and index scan on video tapes as well as digital multi audio tapes.
Timer for six recordings up to three weeks in advance, sleep timer up to 5 hours; infrared remote control with its own jog/shuttle.
