Technics RS-BX808 — 3-head cassette deck with quartz direct drive, closed loop dual capstan, Dolby B/C and HX Pro

Off-tape monitoring at the press of a button, a quartz-locked direct-drive capstan motor and a closed tape path between two capstans: the RS-BX808 brings together in one Technics component exactly the technology that matters for careful cassette recordings. Separate record and playback heads let you listen to the recording straight off the tape while it is being made and compare it with the source – level errors become obvious immediately, not only when the tape is played back later.

The deck is intended for anyone who records cassettes rather than just playing them: transfers from vinyl and CD, recordings from an FM tuner or personal compilations. Because bias and recording level can be adjusted by hand to the cassette in use, different tape types can be made to sound balanced. At 43 cm wide it fits into any standard hi-fi rack.

Highlights & Features

3-head transport: separate record and playback heads made of permalloy (in a shared head housing) plus a double-gap ferrite erase head; the MONITOR button switches between source (SOURCE) and off-tape (TAPE), with the selected setting shown in the display.
Closed loop dual capstan (printed on the cassette door): two capstan shafts, each with its own pinch roller, keep the tape taut and even across the heads.
Digital Servo Quartz DD: quartz-locked direct-drive motor for the capstan, separate DC motor for the reel tables; the cassette door opens and closes motorised via OPEN/CLOSE.
Dolby B and Dolby C noise reduction; Dolby HX Pro is not noise reduction but adjusts the bias dynamically during recording – for more high-frequency headroom with treble-rich material.
Manual calibration: REC CAL switches the level display to bias or level adjustment; the BIAS control and separate LEVEL controls for left and right adapt frequency response and sensitivity to the loaded cassette.
Large REC LEVEL control with BALANCE control for channel matching, front marking "Linear Magne-Field Class AA"; the tape type (normal, chrome, metal) is detected automatically and shown in the display.
Peak level meter with switchable display range (METER RANGE) and APRS, which holds the peak value of the input signal in record standby.
TPS track search via REW/FF, MEMORY REPEAT for repeated playback and MEMORY STOP (rewind to counter reading 0); counter switchable between tape counter and elapsed time.
AUTO REC MUTE inserts blank gaps between tracks; MPX filter for Dolby recordings from FM radio; TIMER switch (REC/PLAY) for recording or playback via an external timer; headphone output with its own level control.
