Onkyo DR-S501 – DVD Receiver in Silver with SACD, DVD-Audio and HDMI (receiver without speakers)

A disc drive for SACD, DVD-Audio and DVD-Video, a stereo amplifier and an FM/AM tuner in a chassis just 9 cm high: the DR-S501 from Onkyo combines what would otherwise take three components. Connect two speakers, hook up the TV via HDMI, and you have a compact system that serves films and music alike. The audio section works with a 192 kHz/24-bit converter; the aluminium front panel with its two large knobs for input and volume keeps operation pleasantly straightforward.

The combination is intended for living rooms or studies where there is no room for a full stack of equipment – for instance a TV with two stereo speakers on which the occasional DVD is played and radio or CD is heard the rest of the time. Only the receiver is supplied; speakers and a subwoofer are not included and are added to suit the room.

Highlights & Features

Receiver without speakers: only the DVD receiver is being sold. Two front speakers (4 to 16 ohms, screw terminals) and, if desired, a powered subwoofer on the pre out are connected.
Universal disc drive: SACD (single layer, dual layer, hybrid), DVD-Audio, DVD-Video, Video CD and audio CD as well as CD-R/RW, DVD-R/RW and DVD+R/RW with MP3, WMA, JPEG and DivX files.
HDMI output with scaling of disc playback to 720p or 1080i, plus an HDMI input for passing through a further source (1080p compatible); component output with progressive scan and 108 MHz/14-bit video converter.
Stereo power amplifier with 2x 50 W into 6 ohms and impedance selector (4 to 16 / 6 to 16 ohms); 192 kHz/24-bit audio converter, Dolby Digital and DTS decoders for DVD-Video soundtracks (played back over two channels).
Four listening modes: Pure Audio (display and video circuitry switched off, indicated by an LED on the front), Direct, Stereo and Theater-Dimensional for a virtual surround impression from just two speakers.
FM/AM tuner with 40 presets and RDS (station name and radio text); tuning and preset selection directly via the front keys Tuning/Preset and Preset Memory.
Two digital inputs (optical and coaxial) and two analogue AV inputs (Video 1, Video 2/Dock) for a set-top box, games console or an Onkyo RI Dock for iPod (RI control jack); SCART output with RGB for older TVs.
Adjustable subwoofer level (−15 to +12 dB), crossover frequency and speaker size; A/V sync up to 100 ms, Late Night function (Dolby Digital), sleep timer 10 to 90 minutes, four-step display brightness, parental lock, 6.3 mm headphone jack.
